At 1:19 pm a 5.5 magnitude earthquake was registered outside Portola, California, almost due east of Mendocino, on the opposite side of the state.
Two days prior, on August 8, 2001, A Green Tara Sand Mandala Ceremony for the healing of the Pacific Ocean took place in Santa Barbara, California.
